Records as Religion

"In fact one might say to all these records of human life, all these Grammata that have come down to us, what Marcus Aurelius teaches us to say to ourselves : each one is "a little soul carrying a corpse." Each one, besides the material and temporary message it bears, is a record, however imperfect, of human life and character and feeling. In so far as the record can get across the boundary that separates mere record of fact from philosophy or poetry, so far it has a soul and still lives. This is clearest, of course, in the records to which we can definitely attribute beauty. Take a tragedy of Aeschylus, a dialogue of Plato, take one of the very ancient Babylonian hymns or an oracle of Isaiah. The prophecy of Isaiah re- ferred primarily to a definite set of facts and contained some definite and generally violent political advice ; but we often do not know what those facts were, nor care one way or another about the advice.
Both soul and body are preserved, imperfectly of course, in Grammata or Letters ; in a long series of marks scratched, daubed, engraved, written or printed, stretching from the inscribed bone implements and painted rocks of prehistoric man, through the great literatures of the world, down to this morning's newspaper and the MS. from which I am speaking ; marks which have their own history also and their own vast varieties. And "the office of the art Grammatike is so to deal with the Grammata as to recover from them all that can be recovered of that which they have saved from oblivion, to reinstate as far as possible the spoken word in its first impressiveness and musicalness." That is not a piece of modern sentiment. It is the strict doctrine of the scribes.
We intellectuals of the twentieth century, poor things, are so intimately accustomed to the use of Grammata that probably many of us write more than we talk and read far more than we listen. Language has become to us primarily a matter of Grammata. We have largely ceased to demand from the readers of a book any imaginative transliteration into the living voice. But mankind was slow in acquiescing in this renunciation. Isocrates, in a well-known passage (5, 10) of his Letter to Philip, laments that the scroll he sends will not be able to say what he wants it to say. Philip will hand it to a secretary and the secretary, neither know- ing nor caring what it is all about, will read it out " with no persuasiveness, no indication of changes of feeling, as if he were giving a list of items." The early Arab writers in the same situation used to meet it squarely. The sage wrote his own book and trained his disciples to read it aloud, each sentence exactly right ; and generally, to avoid the mistakes of the ordinary untrained reader, he took care that the script should not be intelligible to such persons.
First, we may say, the chains of the mind are not broken by any form of ignorance. The chains of the mind are broken by understanding. And so far as men are unduly enslaved by the past it is by understanding the past that they may hope to be free. But, secondly, it is never really the past the true past that enslaves us ; it is always the present. It is not the conventions of the seventeenth or eighteenth century that now make men conventional. It is the conventions of our own age ; though of course I would not deny that in any age there are always fragments of the uncomprehended past still floating, like dead things pretending to be alive. What one always needs for freedom is some sort of escape from the thing that now holds him. A man who is the slave of theories must get outside them and see facts ; a man who is the slave of his own desires and prejudices must widen the range of his experience and imagination. But the thing that enslaves us most, narrows the range of our thought, cramps our capacities and lowers our standards, is the mere Present the present that is all round us, accepted and taken for granted.
The joy and grief of the artist in his art, of the strong man in his fighting, of the seeker after knowledge or righteousness in his many wanderings ; these and things like them, all the great terrors and desires and beauties, belong somewhere to the permanent stuff of which daily life consists ; they go with hunger and thirst and love and the facing of death."

I.B.M. 7090 - Music From Mathematics

Music From Mathematics" was an album of early electronic music, programmed by the boffins (very likely in authentic period white coats and glasses) at Bell Laboratories way back in the early 1960s, using the then-new IBM 7090 computer and an "electronic to sound transducer". The music on the album, about half of which is included here, is a mixture of strange, other-worldly blips, rushing white noise, tootly reworkings of classical pieces and a marvellous period "singing computer" version of "A Bicycle Made For Two" (already featured on the 365 Days Project, #62, and so not included again). Full marks to Decca Records for releasing the record - remember that in 1962, these alien sounds would have been totally new, and suitably space-age in their sound.

A Note On Negro Poetry

To fix on the point where the forces have accumulated, from whence the formulated sense springs, the invisible radiance of substance, the natural relation, but hidden and just, naively, without explanation.
To round off and regulate into shapes, into constructs, the images according to their weight, color and matter; or to map the arrangements of the values, the material and lasting densities, subordinating nothing to them. Classification of the comic operas sanctioned by the aesthetic of accessories. (O, my drawer number ABSOLUTE.)
I abhor to enter a house where the balconies, the "ornaments", are carefully stuck to the wall. Yet the sun, the stars continue to vibrate and hum freely in space, but I loathe to identify the explanatory hypotheses (asphyxiant probable) with the principle of life, activity, certainty.
The crocodile hatches the future life, rain falls for the vegetal silence, one isn't a creator by analogy. The beauty of the satellites – the teaching of light – will satisfy us, for we are God only for the country of our knowledge, in the laws according to which we live experience on this earth, on both sides of our equator, inside our borders. Perfect example of the infinite we can control: the sphere.
To round off and regulate into shapes, into constructs, the images according to their weight, color and matter; or to map the arrangements of the values, the material and lasting densities through personal decision and the unswerving firmness of sensibility, comprehension adequate to the matter transformed, close to the veins and rubbing against them in the pain for the present, definite joy. One creates an organism when the elements are ready for life. Poetry lives first of all for the functions of dance, religion, music and work.

Candle-powered music box

this compilation is a collection of music based on homemade instruments and recordings of sounds around the home. the do-it-yourself aesthetic is taken quite literally here as music is made from the sounds of a dryer, a sink, electric instruments made from sticks found in backyards, grandma's oxygen tank, circuit-bent devices and more. musicians and non-musicians from around the world contributed a dozen carefully-selected tracks.

erst post festum erkennbar.
erhitzt.

CORRIDORS aka Byron Westbrook is an artist working with the dynamic quality of physical space using multi-channel sound and images. His audio/video performances under the name CORRIDORS involve the distribution of processed instrumental and environmental recordings through a multi-channel environment with a focus on energy distilled from sound and light.
"To call Byron Westbrook a composer of breathtakingly beautiful ambient pieces and drone works is reasonably accurate but painfully reductive; Westbrook, whose work under the name Corridors has involved acoustic instruments, field recordings, spatialized playback and lighting, is the kind of artist for whom the old, mostly disused term intermedia was coined." -TimeOut New York
----------------------------
Heribert Friedl follows the kind of minimalist aesthetics that works with a few sounds, small events, nearly imperceptibl movements. Despite seeming simple, this is a very delicate kind of music: each and every sound bears enormous significance and have to bear the responsibility for the whole work.
After more mp3-releases and albums on labels LINE, Trente Oiseaux and and/OAR he founded his label nonvisualobjects with Raphael Moser in 2005. The label releases works by such renowned minimalist artists as Steve Roden, Richard Chartier, Roel Meelkop, Bernhard Günter, among others.

Imagine a dark room and a film projector in that room . Next moment there is the light. It creates a beam. The light beam is stretched through the room like a string. The projector is loaded with a film. There is no film on the film. It appears right in that room, right in that lightbeam. And it plays on the beam. Imagine the sound between the vertical rolling of the film and the horizontal video interlacing. Now you can turn off electricity and dive back into the dark room.
Can you hear the light? Can you listen to a colour?

PAOLO INVERNI
"PATHS"
In Paths Inverni plays back some music he loves (by Steve Roden, William Basinski, Akira Rabelais, Christina Kubisch, Painting Petals On Planet Ghost, Nuno Canavarro) in places that have marked his life, and then records the "dialogue" between the music itself and the environmental sounds.
The work consists of an artist´s book, three audio/visual installations, and six photographs on lambda print.

Daniel Grunenberg, Konstantin Denkinger, Tim Koglin, Gudrun Hinnenburg, Leitung Lora Fleischhauer
Helmut Forsthoff Quartett
Helmut Forsthoff tenor sax / Gerhard „Kubi“ Kubach bass / Denis Stilke drums / Paul Schwingenschlögl trumpet, flugelhorn
Berlin Jazz Composers Orchestra Jay Jay Be Ce, Leitung: Christof Griese
Moritz Köther, Nils Feldmann, Henrik Baumgarten, Simon Barchewitz, Andres Reifgerst saxes / Tobias Knebel, David Heiß, Jan Kaiser trumpets / Nils Marquard, Maxim Tartakovskiy, Nils Nüsse trombones / Antje Rössler piano / Christian Kühn guitar / Paul Lapp bass / Leon Griese drums

DIVERGENCE

It begins like waking from a dream into a nightmare, and carries the listener through a fractured path designed and constructed through the creativity of artists with the desire to surpass themselves. Created by members of the electronic music production community - IDMforums, in honor of the Industrial, EBM & Power Electronics section, not just as another industrial compilation, but as a tribute to a style of music that has inspired us to explore and reimagine sound through our own vision. Contained within the tracks in this compilation are echoes from not only the past and present of industrial music, but perhaps the future as well.
Divergence features 14 tracks from a diverse selection of artists from the IDMforums community, including new and exclusive tracks from Keef Baker, Endif, Tapage, Unterm Rad, and more. Both downloadable packages contain excellent full album artwork by Sean Forsythe, and short bios of all included artists in a single PDF document for your convenience.
